Abel Sonata in A minor
Richard Boothby and Silas Wollston present pieces from a recently discovered cache of music in a castle in Poland, probably bought by Count Joachim Carl Maltzan, Prussian ambassador to London and amateur of the viol.
The Bach and Abel families became acquainted when Johann Sebastian lived and worked in Cöthen and Abel was gamba player to the music-loving Elector. The next generation met up again when Johann Christian Bach moved to London, and Carl Friedrich Abel followed him several years later. Together they founded the Bach-Abel concert series, which were the toast of the town for 20 years.
